The Walkmen @ SXSW 2010

Here is a link to NPR, check out the Walkmen playing at Stubbs for SXSW. Austin, TX was recently listed in the top 10 places to live, and the amazing music scene has a LOT to do with it. Also check out the link to The Avett Brothers performing for the program Austin City Limits. These two festivals are a MUST for any music lover!

Side Note: These are two of my favorite bands, they also have performed my two favorite shows of this year. Please check them out, you will not regret the time spent.

5 days and counting...

 

This will be my scene in t-minus five days. I must say I have never felt that I needed a break more in my life. There is a fear of hearing Weight of Lies and tearing up at our VIP table and remembering why this is my much needed break.

Also I am severely excited with the idea of what has been described to me as the best pancakes in the world...so maybe...okay weird Weight of Lies just came on, more proof my iTunes may just be psychic.

Never been more disappointed...

I have been thinking about this commercial since I first saw it months ago. Cat Power, covering Bowie, selling cars?! Thinking that this was just a cover that Lincoln decided to use to sell autos, I went in search for a downloadable version (for some reason does that make me sound old?) and found it's only for the commercial. 

I love that commercials are steering away from the ever annoying jingle (chia pet please stop) but sad that now music is just for commercials.

Not A Bad Dylan Cover

Phoenix is all over the place right now, you can hear them on PLENTY of commercials and are probably sick of hearing them...or so you thought.

If you want a pretty decent Bob Dylan cover from his epic Blonde on Blonde by Phoenix take a listen.

Elvis is Back...

For Christmas I purchased Last Train to Memphis, a book on the rise of Elvis for my Dad. Which means he has sent some Youtube videoes. First is Elvis performing in Tupelo, Mississippi where just three years earlier is family was poorer than poor (also where he began loving bananas and peanut butter)...see if you can hear him over the mass of screaming tweens!!

This second video was just describe to me as a bad song. Funny title, but sounds like Elvis. Got to love the 50's...I am off to Brooklyn now to see Who Shot Rock and Roll!

Dead Man's Bones

This past Friday I ventured out (in the rain) to see Dead Man's Bones at Philadelphia's own First Unitarian Church Sanctuary. Dead Man's Bones can also be known as Ryan Gosling's music project that appears to be obsessed with dark subject matter including ghosts, zombies, death and creepy children's choirs.

After waiting about 30 minutes in a GIANT line to get inside we got seated in the pews (this is where the weirdness begins) and waited for the opening acts to begin. These acts consisted of a magician, contortionist, comedian (we think although I missed the humor), three adorable children dancing around (with one dressed as a dog), and a pair of violin-gypsy-opera singers that danced. All of this being narrated by a man dressed as a ghost (sheet and all), wearing a cowboy hat.

Very quirky and bizarre, but that's part of the fun.

Once Dead Man's Bones came on you could tell this was all very new to them. Unsmooth transitions from song to song, sound issues and "whoops let me start that again" but it was a fun show. I will say though I was slightly surprised by the darkness of the content sang about. Let me know what you think.

Flashy Python, Thom Yorke and James Mercer with Danger Mouse

So apparently creating super groups (or just solo gigs) is the new trend in music. Why have one band when you can have two...or even three!

Flashy Python is the new solo front man from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Alec Ounsworth's voice is an acquired taste, but I am a Dylan nut so I couldn't have been more excited to hear about this album full of collaborations. Cameos from The Walkmen, Man Man, Dr. Dog and if I remember correctly from when Pitchfork first reported it, Galactic.

Now we have Thom Yorke, this is no news flash since he's been solo for awhile, but the members of his band have just been announced. So here you go...Flea on bass, Joey Waronker from Beck and REM, Mauro Refosco and Radiohead's own producer. Not a bad line up.

Finally James Mercer and Danger Mouse are teaming up...and this isn't just a one time gig. James Mercer, also known as the frontman of The Shins and Danger Mouse being one half of Gnarls Barkley and mastermind behind the Gray Album. Expect to hear something early next year...which sounds far off but is closer than you might think.

The Walkmen

Last Wednesday The Walkmen rocked out Philadelphia's Theatre for the Living Arts for a "kinda hometown gig" as Hamilton called it. Completing the stage was a four piece horn section made up of friends and a wife. On The Water and Louisana seemed to be the standout songs for my experience.

I must say the swaying, infectious screaming sound is the main reason I love the Walkmen, but I must say I was defenitely not excited about the sound quality at TLA.

What a lovely week of music!

Saturday and Monday I got to experience some great music with some pretty interesting companions!

Saturday was CD101's Summerfest consisting of some great acts: Envelope, Living Things, Company of Thieves (they have a wonderful energy and sound), Stellastar, Matt and Kim and Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears (sadly I missed this set since I faded about half way through Matt and Kim super synthed show). Here are some pictures from LC's pit (not intended to sound dirty, just happens) of me with my four lovely ladies I am leaving in a few short weeks.
HAHA! This cracks me up looks like a panoramic with myself in it twice! The show was another low dough masterpiece. Matt and Kim pumped up the crowd, even after a long technical delay! Stellastar was a wonderful show, getting to see My Coco with my Cocco.


On Monday was the much anticipated Modest Mouse show with Erica and Zack. I must say I like Modest Mouse (not sure if I am ready to use the big "L" word for them yet) but it was very bitter sweet to see them perform 'Ohio' and know I will be leaving that very state in a small amount of time. Glad I got to say farewell with great live music. Here are some pictures from that adventure. (If you get a chance to see Modest Mouse be prepared for some magical lights but watch out for the bad ass twelve year olds)
